I was looking for somewhere to eat for Saturday brunch when Annie recommended Birchwood Kitchen. Birchwood is a cozy restaurant in Wicker Park, about a 5 minute walk from the Damen stop off the Blue Line. As you can see from the picture below, the restaurant is good for parties of twos or fours seated against the wall. When I arrived around 1pm, the wait was around 40 minutes - tolerable because they had complimentary hot coffee on their patio in the back.
We started out with Blueberry Heart Biscuits with lemon butter. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I normally don't eat butter (not even with my bread), but I thought I'd give the lemon butter a try - and I'm glad I did! It was light, with a tint of sour lemon flavor, just the right amount. Next, I ordered a small Mixed Greens Salad with lemon vinaigrette. (You may notice when you read throughout my blog that I absolutely love lemon!) Anyway, I really enjoyed the salad, but I think someone who may not be so fond of lemon may find it too sour. The mixed greens included spinach, red chard, thinly sliced beets, carrots, and red onions. And finally for my entree, which wasn't difficult for me to choose - I knew exactly what I wanted when I saw it: cauliflower. I LOVE cauliflower. So that was simple. I saw they had a Cauliflower Gratin with Arugula Salad and poached egg (I also LOVE poached eggs), so I decided to go with that. The dish was baked so it was very hot when served. As I made my way through the dish, I noticed it got a tad bit salty toward the end. Other than that, I really enjoyed my dining experience at Birchwood.
I definitely recommend checking it out. If you've tried it before, leave a comment below let me know your thoughts! And if you haven't, give it a shot and share your experience with me!
