Hello! Cheryl here. I am so excited to be contributing this post to CHOWDOWNOW. Connie and I have known each other for literally years (since first grade!) and I’m so thankful to still have her in my life as one of my best friends. We have had the privilege of traveling together for our high school senior trip to Taiwan and Korea, and studied abroad in Hong Kong together for 4 months where we further explored Asia (Thailand, Cambodia and Shenzhen). Now by “explore,” I actually mean eat everything and anything we could possibly fit into our stomachs. You know, the type of people who plan their travel itineraries based around food rather than sites? Yup, that’s us. But possibly worse.
I remember when Connie first told me she was going vegetarian our first year into college and boy was I NOT THRILLED. I mean, 90% of the time we hung out involved food! We were also the type of friends that shared everything (major pet peeve: people ordering the same dish at the table. Just no.), so you can only imagine my frustration. It initially took me some time to get used to eating vegetarian meals with Connie but now I absolutely love it. I even crave it. And just to prove it, I went to Umami Burger this past weekend with my family and while everyone ordered truffle burgers, KBBQ burgers, etc., I opted for the black bean burger and it was damn good.
Okay so back to the purpose of my being here…by Chloe.
Per our usual #basic weekend brunch, Connie and I always try to find new places to try and this week she brought up by Chloe. I did my mandatory diligence of the place…yes, Yelp and 5 minutes later we were en route to the village. This charming corner restaurant located in the heart of West Village is a new vegan joint opened by Food Network’s Cupcake Wars champ, Chloe Coscarelli. When you first walk in, it can be a little bit overwhelming since you order at the counter and then awkwardly wait by a table that is just about finished so that you can sit down. The décor is simple but very chic and your food comes out on a metal tray all packaged very nicely. There’s a brick wall that instantly gives off the New York City vibe and the couple of egg shaped hanging chairs along the entrance-way are adorable. Basically an insta blogger’s dream. by Chloe.’s menu is filled with hand-crafted salads, gluten-free options, cold-pressed juices, smoothies, beer and wine and of course, Chloe’s much coveted handmade ice cream and baked goods. 100% Vegan.
Connie got the Guac Burger which was a black bean, quinoa and sweet potato-based patty, filled with corn salsa, onion, guac (duh), and chipotle aioli all sandwiched in between a whole grain bun. Sounds overwhelming? Well yes, it was. WITH FLAVOR. Oh my goodness was this burger delicious. The patty held beautifully together and was moist and beyond flavorful. The fixins’ that went with it complemented the burger so well and that slight kick from the chipotle aioli was just the cherry on top. This is a winner 100%.
Alex got the daily pancake which happened to be a kale and chocolate pancake topped with whipped maple butter. This was a great pancake. Moist, flavorful, packed with chocolate chips. And that whipped maple butter…need I say more? You don’t get much kale flavor but judging by the immense green color of the pancake, I would say Alex got his daily portion of veggies in for the day. :P
I went with the Kale Caesar salad which had shiitake bacon, avocado, almond parm, maple-wheat croutons and Caesar dressing. This unassuming salad was phenomenal! My favorite aspect was definitely the shiitake bacon and the almond parm. Together they added the perfect balance of salt, nuttiness and smokiness to the salad. It’s easy to look this one over when going through the amazing menu but trust me, give this a shot. You won’t regret it.
And finally, to share we got the sweet potato fries with beet ketchup. The fries are air baked which created a light but crispy texture. Overall well made but the highlight of this dish was the beet ketchup. They really need to start selling it by the bottle because it was that good! The beet brings a very slight earthiness and light sweetness to the ketchup which I loved. And it creates a beautiful hot pink color which in my book is always a #win.
Overall, by Chloe. left me wanting more. I kept looking around at everyone’s plate in awe and wanting what they had while at the same time forking down my food. I highly recommend by Chloe. but make sure to get there early as there tends to be a crowd. I will definitely be making a trip back ASAP to get my hands on some of their baked goodies and try everything else on their menu. If I have not convinced you enough, at least do it for the insta.
