Wow! Why did I wait soo long to come try this restaurant?! I've been in Chicago 4.5 years now, and I've heard great things about this place, but never made the effort to try it out...even though I walk past it ALL THE TIME. Finally one night when Connie was flying back from New York, I decided, WE'RE GOING HERE. Connie, Ellen and I arrive at the restaurant and we're seated shortly. Definitely make a reservation on OpenTable especially when there's the option because who likes waiting 1.5 hours for food?? I WANT FOOD NOW, politely of course.
One of our favorite things about Italian food is the abundant number of vegetarian options. Every single dish we ordered was phenomenal, except for the eggplant parm...probably won't order that one again. We started with the Cremimi Mushroom Wood-Oven Pizzette with truffle and fontina fonduta. This was a mini pizza but the flavors were very bold. The pizza was thin and crispy, and they definitely did not skimp on the truffle and mushrooms. It was a great start our meal.
Mama DePandi's Bucatini with pomodoro and basil is one of RPM's signature dishes and it definitely lived up to the hype. All their pasta are made fresh in house everyday and you can taste the difference. The pomodoro sauce was perfect with the bucatini, lots of flavor! I wanted to lick the plate. Actually, I wanted to lick many of the plates. Connie, Ellen and I were scraping each plate with forks, spoons, knifes to get every last bit of every dish LOL. Yes, it was that good.
The Roasted Mushrooms and the Garlic Whipped Potatoes were the highlight of the meal. I just found out, like two hours ago, that RPM delivers. HOLY SHIT GAME CHANGER. Yea we will be ordering roasted mushrooms and garlic whipped potatoes all of winter now. I don't know what they did with the mushrooms but they were so tender, and the shallots were incredible too. The garlic whipped potatoes were so creamy. I was eating mouthfuls of mushroom and potatoes. Connie, Ellen and I all stopped talking to each other because we were so focused on eating.
The Chanterelle Risotto and Eggplant Parmesan was also very delicious. We love mushrooms, so naturally we order everything on the menu with mushrooms and that was a GREAT DECISION. Risotto was cooked perfectly, the rice had the right bite to it. The eggplant parm was great too, but not as memorable as all the other ones.
Moving onto desserts. Because ordering 6 dishes wasn't enough for the 3 of us, we of course ordered 2 more desserts. We really didn't have a choice. Right after our waitress told us the dessert special which was Beignet style Donuts with a lemon curd, whipped nutella, and vanilla marscarpone dipping sauces and recommended the giant Nutella Ferrero Rocher, Hazelnut Tartufo, we said we needed both. The donuts were really fluffy, but did not taste like beignets, which was fine because who doesn't like fluffy donuts?! The three dipping sauces were awesome too! The Giant Nutella Ferrero Rocher was the perrrrrfect cherry on top of a glorious meal. The chocolate shell with hazelnut bits filled with nutella ice cream, AMAZEBALLLZ.
Verdict: Must try. Most definitely coming back. Worth the few extra bucks.
Maybe next time we'll get to see Giuliana and Bill YAY!
